FAQ

What is TileStream?

TileStream is a modern raster tile service that processes high-resolution ortho imagery into cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs (COGs), then hydrates a tile cache to stream raster tiles for use in web maps, falling back to reading from the source data if the cache does not yet exist.

Is there a limit on the zoom levels?

TileStream hydrates tile endpoints up the maximum zoom level for the tileset, usually 21 or 22. Support for overzoom is on the roadmap.

How much does it cost?

TileStream will have clear, transparent and extremely competitive pricing. Final pricing will be announced at a later date.

How does it work?

TileStream receives high-resolution tiff images from the client and processes these into compressed orthomosaics, available to the public as cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs and common web map raster tiles. We are currently testing several publicly accessible raster image from various providers. You can browse the currently available image tiles here.

Does TileStream replace my Gloabl Imagery Provider?

TileStream is engineered to deliver high-resolution ortho imagery via map tiles and COGs for small to medium scale regions - for example county-level aerial imagery or large UAV flights. The example image above is 1-1.5 inch resolution imagery of the Ohio State University Main Campus. The original TIFF files are close to 30GB in size. TileStream processes these images into cloud-optimized GeoTIFFs at 1/10th the size, and still streams tiles at a higher resolution than the leading global imagery providers. That said it is not intended to be used in applications that require national or global coverage.

Where can I upload my imagery?

TileStream is still researching methods of imagery ingestion. If you are interested stay sign up for email alerts at this link above.
